Something felt off when I woke up. At first, I chalked it up to the fucked-up dream I had. The subconscious was a tricky thing that sometimes stuck with a person long after their conscious mind had taken over.
Like when people glanced suspiciously around their room for the boogeyman, or when they were pissed at a significant other for dream cheating. It didnât matter if none of it was real, because to them, it felt real.
So when I opened my eyes that morning, I wasnât surprised that I could still feel hands on me. It was nothing more than residual dream memories, which was something that would fade with time.
I kept waiting for it to go away. In the shower, I told myself that all I could smell was the fruity scent of my shampoo, which had absolutely no hint of rosewood. Yet it was still there, tickling the back of my nose.
That was easier to ignore than the goosebumps prickling up my arms when I got dressed. It felt like I was being watched. Nothing seemed to help me shake that sensation. Not even the anger that came when I saw my empty underwear drawer.
I had every intention of giving Wyatt a piece of my mind when I joined the twins for breakfast, but all I could think about was the way their turquoise eyes looked in the firelight. It was so vivid that I could hear the flame crackling in the background. Almost as if the dream wasnât a dream at all, but a real memory.
At one point, I even opened my mouth to ask the twins about their night. Then Wyatt started talking about some girl named Poppy. Discretion was not his strong suit. Five minutes into that conversation, and I knew way more about that girlâs body than I did my own.
I shouldâve taken Magnusâs cue and walked out when he did. On the upside, Wyattâs way-too-detailed account managed to take my mind off other things. However, I would never eat another banana.
My mood picked up until I walked into the library and was met with Reeseâs smile. Almost instantly, those strange sensations came flooding back. Though this time they were a little different. It was more like a pull than residual dream effects. As if there were an invisible force flipping in my stomach every time Reese looked at me.
Reese was a good-looking guy, so a crush could be explained away. But this shit was just fucking weird. Still, I tried to ignore it and focus on my lesson.
Letâs just say I didnât learn much.
In fact, I had no idea what the hell the Reese was talking about. Now if someone asked me how many golden flecks were in his green eyes, that could answer. Eleven in the right and twelve in the left. There was also a ring of light blue around his pupil, and when the corner of his mouth tipped up, that ring darkened.
âSince English was your worst subject, I thought weâd start there.
